About the event
Born of San Francisco and Brazil and everything in between. Original music for original lives. Nascido do São Francisco e do Brasil e tudo mais. Música original para a vida originais.
About: Boca do Rio is música orgânica. Live music inspired by the thousands of musicians and the music lovers that have gone before us and laid the rhythmic foundations of samba, baião, samba-reggae, the dances for the orishas, and all that gives homage to the beats. It is the African diaspora alive through rhythms and pulses – it is the commonality that binds humans to the air we breathe, the food from which we nourish, the water we imbibe, and the love through which we flourish. Boca do Rio exists to share and celebrate music and everything that it brings to our lives through the cross-pollination of the Americas. It’s the water that flows from mountains to oceans, from inside to out. It’s the earth beneath our feet, the soil beneath the concrete, the minerals from the stars that grace each of our cells.
The San Francisco band Boca do Rio takes its name from the Portuguese “mouth of the river” – the place where myriad streams and sources converge into one powerful, flowing, physical energy.
The band started flowing when Kevin Welch and Alex Calatayud formed a musical partnership in the late nineties that would redefine Brazilian music in the Bay Area. The musical collaboration was founded in deep respect for past traditions, steeped in the sambas and choros (Brazilian ragtime of a bygone era) that echoed through the Brazilian favelas, while always evolving forward to create an organic sound that is decidely modern and funky. www.bocadorio.com
Joining these artists to round out this evening's acoutic quartet is Brasileriña vocalist Marcia Almeida Jácomo, adding her jazzy, spirited voice to this beautiful music. Marcia is known for her authentic, lovely singing, performing with Mais Bossa, Boca do Rio, and others.
For this special evening, Boca do Rio is excited to host visiting guitarist Julio Lemos for a night of Brazilian music and dance on Wolf Creek!
Julio Lemos is a 7-string guitar master and performer in the field of Brazilian instrumental music. He shares a virtuosity from his foundation as a Brazilian classical guitar concertist, under the influence of the composers Villa-Lobos and Radamés Gnatalli, and added to his training in the “Rodas de Choro." Lemos is a specialist in the language of choro and samba accompaniment from the 7-string guitar, with Dino 7 strings and Rafael Rabelo as main references, adding their influences from the guitar of Baden Powell and Marco Pereira in the samba-jazz style.
Lemos became a professor at the Federal University of Goiás in 2010, with his doctorate in music from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and part of the doctorate from San Francisco State University in California. He recently recorded with Hermeto Pascoal, Marcos Sacramento, Silvério Pontes, Eduardo Neves, Carlos Malta, Marco Pereira e Luis Filipe.
Lemos has played and taught workshops in Europe, the United States, and China. He was a judge of the São Paulo carnival in 2017 - 2019. He recently recorded his CD/DVD, Julio Lemos Brasil Acústico, available on all digital platforms. More info, videos, recordings and video lessons: juliolemos.net
******* About Wild Eye Pub's events:
This is a ticketed event. Our limited event seating often fills before the day of the show. Reservations are always recommended - make yours easily, at the same time you buy your ticket online!
Wild Eye Pub is a family-friendly event venue, with a restaurant and bar. The Pub offers freshly crafted food from local & organic sources, and a full bar with regional brews, wines & spirits, with nightly entertainment in a comfy 'supper club' style with an easy vibe.
We expect this event to be on our creekside stage. However - depending on weather, it may be creekside, or on our large dining room stage. For both, we serve "supper club" style: Table service of food and drinks is (quietly) offered throughout the event.
For this event, seating and service begins 1 hour before the show.
As a "supper club," we charge a sliding scale cover fee for most shows. We don't "turn over tables" to serve more diners; the audience keeps their dining tables for the whole show. Thank you for supporting real performing artists!
Pub has free parking. And free public parking is nearby: corner of Mill & McCourtney, a 2-minute walk. Across from Pub's front door, find parking up and down French Ave, a gentle slope.
Well-behaved pets may attend some creekside events -- but PLEASE call ahead to discuss particular shows.
